Computing from bed
I completely blew up my computer trying to install SP3 for Windows XP (I was still using SP1)–which I was only installing because of stupid iTunes–so I spent most of my evening kicking my PC and pooping around on my laptop. And now, having cleanly installed a fresh copy of Windows on the PC, pooping around on both. While downloading apps on the iPod. If only I had a BlackBerry…

The season’s first coating of snow has landed in the area.

MAKE MY PARK
You can actually sort of see where I work in that second pic. When my lease here is up, I plan on moving into one of the Newport apartment buildings: <5 minutes walk to work and the PATH station. Currently my walk is 15 minutes through a tree-lined street and then a mall. The commute is just too much. (Kidding, obviously. My apartment just sucks. And I want a doorman.)
It is currently 51° F in my apartment because I’m too cheap to turn on the heat and as the top floor apartment, I’m counting on my neighbours to “help” me out here. Fortunately Kohl’s had a good sale on bath robes. Best investment all winter (certainly better than my 401(k) and Roth, that’s for sure).

Best way to survive winter weekends: get in a bath robe and never leave the bed.
Remember New York
Staring outside
As reckless winter made its way
From Staten Island to the Upper West Side
Whiting out our streets along the way
And the snow is coming down
On our New England town
And it’s been falling all day long
What else is new
What can I do
But sing this valley winter song
I wrote for you
- “Valley Winter Song”

On Monday John had me chopping yams for dinner and it took me about 12 years because my arms are built like twigs and his old knives are really more like the plastic swords you get with your kid’s Halloween pirate costume. I mean, if you were going to murder someone with those knives, you’d be better off trying to club the guy over the head with them rather than stabbing him.
So I got John a set of knives (J.A. Henckels, my preferred brand—only because I can’t afford Korin) for Christmas and gave them to him last night. They are as much for me as they are for him. Dull knives are very dangerous.
Anyway, I figured they’d make an excellent gift because if John happened to piss me off that evening, I could present them to him by sticking them in his chest. On the flip side, if I piss him off, the mental connection between ‘knife’ and ‘Quynh’ has already been tidily bridged by yours truly.*
Huh, you think an entry about giving my boyfriend a set of kitchen knives would be this filled with talk of violence? I’m nice and well-balanced in person, I promise.

*Disclaimer: Domestic violence—or, well, any sort of violence towards another person at all—is really not cool.

After several lewd comments were made during the office holiday party:
Quynh: Oh man, we say way too much inappropriate stuff at work. We could go to HR and sue each other for a million counts of sexual harassment.
Eric: You could have totally nailed me several times.

Oh those silly Asians and their Engrish and/or lack of suitable cultural translation. Here’s a couple I had on my phone for a while.

Very Spicy Cattle Fish
On the menu at a restaurant in Chinatown. I thought this was just an isolated misspelling of ‘cuttlefish,’ but a quick and dirty Google search tells me tons of non-native English speakers (I assume) write this. Well, that kind of diminishes the fun.

Scientific illustration of Ichthyus taurus
I illustrated what I imagine a Cattle Fish looks like. My inspiration: this fella.

Hello, world. Quynh here. After registering this domain about a year and a half ago, I’m finally putting up some “real” content. And like the good old days when I was much more into web design and having a web presence, before all these social networks and blogging tools made it easy, I’m putting this together at 4am… Er, guess it’s 5am now. I’m not exactly sure what I intend to do with this website or how much I’ll even update it after this, but I figure I shouldn’t let this wonderfully clever name go to waste. I am, after all, pretty awesome, and my friends and family shouldn’t have me all to themselves.
Well, it’s late (early) and I should probably not tool around with my sleep schedule so much since I’ve got that whole 9-5 thing going on these days.
Ciao,
Quynh
