You’ve been there, you know what I’m talking about. I suppose as a resident of the neighborhood and being like a block away from this, I have a responsibility to be able to tell people what it is without them having to consult their iPhones in the middle of the sidewalk.
It’s an art installation and here is what it’s all about, according to the developer’s site:
“Metronome is an innovative work consisting of three primary components. The entire work symbolizes the intangibility of time which is reflected in the relationship between various elements in the piece. The central component, measuring 100 feet high and 60 feet wide, is formed of an undulating brick wall emanating from the heart of the work – a dark circular void surrounded by gold leaf overlay that dissipates across the panel into gold fragments – like the rippling of water caused by a single stone, diminishing in frequency across the vertical plane. Below, a massive rock juts out through the undulating brick wall, grounding the work. To the left of the central component, on the glass façade, is a digital timepiece which counts the twenty-four hours of the day while simultaneously subtracting the time remaining in the day. To the right, is the lunar timepiece, composed of a sphere set into a socket, which is synchronized to revolve with the phases of the moon.” (Bolding is mine.)
And here’s how to read the numbers (clicky):
“…if the clock reads 0704369X1235516 it means that it is 7:04 A.M and 36.9 seconds. (7 hours and 4 minutes after midnight) and that there are 16 hours, 55 minutes and 23.1 seconds remaining until midnight. The middle digit, representing hundredths of a second, is a blur and cannot be read.”
NOW YOU KNOW!

I’ve been telling my buddies this for at least a couple months, but I figure I should have it in writing: MOUSTACHES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK! Unfortunately, I have already been seeing numerous people around the city sporting them now, but trust me, I was predicting this months ago!

Finally tracked this mother down. Seems like it’s hard to find in Manhattan. Fortunately I’m in Jersey City five days out of the week and can walk over to the Target in Newport. :)
Verdict: Delicious. I’m not a big soda drinker (only with fast food, since I figure I’m putting crap in my stomach anyway), but this stuff is awesome. High fructose corn syrup can suck it.

I’m no volatility-loving trader, but damn, this week was boring as hell. Geez. I’ve already lost all my money, so I don’t care anymore… Just DO SOMETHING! I want to hear people singing “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” at my favorite Wall Street bar again! Something! Anything!

I SEE YOU AT MY FAVORITE CLUB EVERY WEDNESDAY, AND LIKE ME, YOU ARE ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE THERE. YOU DON’T APPEAR TO BE ON DRUGS AND YOU ORDER MAYBE ONE CORONA THE ENTIRE NIGHT. YOU SAY YOU ARE A DOCTOR IN THE ER AND THAT YOU GO TO SAID CLUB TO UNWIND.
YOU ARE THE BEST GODDAMN DANCER I HAVE EVER SEEN. YOU ARE SO INTO THE MUSIC AND DOING YOUR THING THAT I CANNOT HELP BUT BE FILLED WITH JOY WHEN I SEE YOU. AND IT REALLY IS NOT FAIR THAT YOU NOT ONLY DANCE LIKE A MOFO BUT ARE AN ER DOCTOR AS WELL. STOP BEING SO GODDAMN GOOD AT EVERYTHING, JERK.

Black Eyed Peas, circa 2005, from their Monkey Business album:
Oo, lala aw wee wee
Nowadays music is all about fee
The soul is caged no bits now free
Unless the rhyme was rocked by me
(etc.)
…
I don’t know what you came to do
I came to drop the phunk on you
Depends on that sonic sound
But you know what?
They don’t want music
They don’t want music
They just want (a boom, boom, boom boom boom [2x])
They don’t want music, they don’t know how to use it
- “They Don’t Want Music”

Black Eyed Peas, circa now:
I’m so 3008
You so 2000 and late
I got that boom, boom, boom
That future boom, boom, boom
Let me get it now
Boom boom boom, gotta get-get
Boom boom boom, gotta get-get
Boom boom boom, gotta get-get
Boom boom boom, gotta get-get
Boom boom boom, now
Boom boom boom, now
Boom boom pow
Boom boom pow
- “Boom Boom Pow”

I love NYC and I love my neighborhood and I don’t mind working in Jersey City.
Here’s what really sucks about that whole arrangement though:

Triple tax, baby, read it and weep. New York, New Jersey, and New York Fuckin’ City, in all its we’re-so-special-we-have-our-own-tax glory. I know I’ll get lots of the state/city back, but I could really, really use that extra hundred bucks per paycheck I took a haircut on since moving—not much to most people, but enough to make things a bit… sticky, for me. :(
What a difference a river makes. Ah well, that’s the price you pay… I love my neighborhood.
