8bit DJ

So at Electric Zoo Deadmau5 played the Zelda theme (actually it is part of his song called “You Need a Ladder”) and this weekend Tiësto played Tetris Type A.

<3

And yes... We regretted not getting tickets for the third night. His sets from Thursday and Friday were totally different (Friday was really good!), much to Rich's and my delighted surprise, so we wanted to see what he'd pull out for Saturday, but it was sold out.

Moral of the story: GO TO EVERY SHOW, EVERY TIME.

Speaking of video game music, I got us tickets for Video Games Live, which is a concert of video game music played by a live orchestra. See, I do enjoy non-electronic music!

(Actually, I have found that many trance fans also really enjoy classical music. Probably has to do with placing more importance on the sound rather than lyrics or meaning or whatever. I’m a big fan of Bach myself. I bet he’d be a right wicked producer/DJ if he had been born today instead of 300 years ago.)

Tiësto

Tiësto kicks off his Kaleidoscope World Tour tonight at Hammerstein Ballroom. I’ll be there tonight and tomorrow. I figured going all three nights would be kind of overkill (though who knows, I may regret it… I’m still trying to chase the high I got from Electric Zoo).

I’ve never seen Tiësto live. Can you believe? I feel like such a noob! Remember when he used to put “DJ” in front of his name? Ha. Anyway, I’m excited to see him for the first time.

After this weekend, my calendar is pretty clear as far as this stuff goes. I don’t know what the hell I’m going to do with myself. Fly to Nederland?

Dear Modern Man

You know what this modern woman wants for breakfast? Maybe oatmeal. Bacon and eggs if she’s craving protein. Definitely coffee, but relax — I’m not gonna have you for breakfast, so please don’t be such a wimp about women at work.

It’s high time to accept the fact that a woman might not just be your co-worker. She could be your boss, and you’re gonna have to be prepared to deal, to be a man about it in the true sense of the word. Sure, more working women means more competition, but instead of being threatened by it, be challenged by it. Let’s bring out the best in each other. Win or lose, if you’re a good sport, everybody wins.

Until you get your head around this, you’ll be on your road, and I’ll be on mine. I hope at some point we meet in the middle.

Cheers,
The Modern Woman

In the Family

The world of EDM is pretty incestuous. You get one person who makes a song, then it gets on one of the big guys’ shows, then it gets remixed and mashed up and replayed about eighty times by everyone else. Songs get swapped around by the same DJs and you hear a lot of songs repeated on different radio shows. For the most part, I’m okay with this.

But please for the love of God… Enough Robert Miles. “Children” is 15 years old. Seriously, it was released in 1994. I don’t mind remixing old songs, but that one? The one that’s been played a zillion times, at everything, ever? Including Electric Zoo! I’m Miles’ed out.

Ribwich

I can’t figure out when McDonald’s has their McRib on sale, but here’s a great alternative from 7-Eleven that Rich found for me:

Ribwich!

Ribwich!

Hell yes for the “rib-shaped” sandwich. It is as tasty as the ones I remember from my elementary school cafeteria days.

Loud Electronic Ferocious

Electric Zoo was awesome. There were four stages: main stage, Riverside Arena, Sunday School Hilltop, and Respect Grove/Grove Discotheque. Riverside Arena was definitely the most popular before the big names got on the main stage, which makes sense as it was the kind of trance that gets everyone to roll and throw their hands in the air and go nuts and stuff. You know, the kind of trance that fills… arenas…!

Rich and I thought the DJs in Riverside should’ve been on the main stage. There was so much energy there, it was so full, and there wasn’t a still body in the crowd. The main stage seemed to have a lot more experimental stuff going on during the day. I mean, Francois K, I lurve you at Cielo and all, but sometimes you are really far out, dude. Scratching of heads ensues.

One of the highlights of Riverside Arena for me was Second Sun (Saturday). These guys were so fun to watch. They had ridiculous amounts of energy and they got into their music so much, their excitement was infectious. It is really cool to see artists so passionate about their craft.

The tent I hold dear to my own heart is Grove Discotheque. I have a huge hard-on for all things 70s, especially disco, and a lot of the artists here played that great blend of house and disco I love so much. Frankie Knuckles (Sunday) was the highlight for me here.

As for the main stage, what can I say? I’m already a huge fan of Kaskade and he did not let me down. Deadmau5 I’ve never seen live, and I’m so glad I finally have. When they broke out the NES Legend of Zelda theme I went nuts. And, of course, ARMIN van Buuren. No explanation required. As for Sunday, I was damn tired but brought out all my energy for Ferry Corsten, my favorite DJ ever. He played a lot of stuff from his L.E.F. album, which I really liked. It’s actually what I was looking for when he played at Pacha last October. Finally! I loved his Electric Zoo set.

Rich and I went on to see Ferry at the Pacha afterparty. He went on ’till 5am. If anyone ever questioned whether it was possible to be falling asleep while dancing, the answer is yes. Come hell, high water, or passing out from exhaustion, I wasn’t going home until the man finished his set.

It was an amazing weekend overall. It was exhausting (for the troopers: 11am-11pm both days, plus after-parties), but worth every brain-addled minute. Pictures to come.

Turn Me On With Your Electric Feel

I will be at Electric Zoo this Saturday and Sunday, 11am-11pm each day. I’m so excited something like this has finally come to New York… Hell, to America!

I’m looking forward to the likes of Armin and Kaskade (Saturday), but the one I’m most excited about is Ferry Corsten (Sunday). I can’t believe David Guetta is the headliner for Sunday, not Corsten. Corsten, the guy who won like 80 bajillion DJ awards, is one of the most celebrated people in electronic music, and has his own weekly radio show (COR-STEN’S COUNT-DOWN </robot voice>), is the second guy billed.

I guess that’s Pop Life for you.

But anyway, this should be fun and I hope it’s successful enough to happen again for many more years.

Blow Your Brain

Besides all the other crap I do that kills brain cells, I really enjoy sticking my head in front of—hell, pretty much inside of—the big subwoofers on the dance floor at Cielo. What is wrong with me?

Cielo's dance floor is capped by one of these subwoofers on each end. You can usually find me crouched in front of one of them, sticking my head in the grill.

While we’re on the topic of killing brain cells… Let me just start by saying I don’t actually enjoy smoking pot (not for lack of trying)—haven’t smoked in years—and I have never tried ecstasy. It’s true! (I have other vices.) That being said, I really love it when other people do that stuff. I really, really love the smell of weed being smoked, and I love when loads of people are on E because everyone’s happy and lovely and that vibrant electric elated togetherness fills up the venue and I get lifted up with it.

Do more drugs, people.
