Who else is ready for Fall?
Monthly Archives: August 2010
Today we escaped from the city and went up to Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, which has livestock and vegetables on its 80 acres. We went on the livestock tour and then checked out the veggies on our own. Pictures are in this album.
We also did some heavy duty grocery shopping afterward since we had the Zipcar for the day. When we got home I cooked a 3lb bag of mussels according to a recipe from the chef of my cooking class and ate all of it myself because Rich doesn’t like mussels. It was damn good. Thank you, Chef Loren Banco.

And then the person I’d been rooting for from the beginning of Next Food Network Star won the show, and Video Games Live aired on PBS (!!!).
Today was a win.
Say hi to Hamster (we haven’t named her yet), the Syrian hamster. Check out her beautiful calico coat. Prettiest hamster at the rescue (even though I told the guy I wanted the ugliest, most down-and-out hamster they had). He said he caught her running around the store, so I knew she was the one for me.
We adopted her from Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Brooklyn yesterday evening.
Got time off with Mr Pipsie, got my RSM campus visit scheduled, got my eye on flight prices, now to find an apartment in Amsterdam for the week we’ll be there. Looks like I’ll be spending my Thanksgiving day in Rotterdam, sitting in on a class and speaking to RSM faculty. The rest of the time we’ll be enjoying the Netherlands and maybe a day in Belgium.
I can’t wait to go back to Amsterdam. I can’t believe I was there just this New Years and not even a year has passed before I had to return. Gezelligheid, baby.
So all my music posts are about Amsterdam or Ibiza or somesuch, considering the titles of some of the songs posted include “Ramsterdam” and “Schiphol.”
But wait, Quynh, you live in NYC! What gives!? No love for your home city?
Fine, here it is. And it’s called “Stranded in NYC.” Go figure.

Looks like Ferry’s touring the US in October, the month he usually does Full on Ferry. It would’ve been cool to see him in his hometown of Rotterdam, but he’s coming to NYC (Pacha) on 1 October so I guess that’ll do.
Last year there was the New Island Festival, celebrating 400 years since Henry Hudson sailed over here. All sorts of Dutch stuff, the main draw for me being Armin van Buuren’s free show. It was kind of rained out when we went after Armin’s set, so we didn’t really do much besides check out some art and eat some poffertjes. I figured next year we’d do more. Then I realized you only celebrate 400 year anniversaries once. Idiot! We missed out on a free Boom Chicago show (improv comedy group in Amsterdam), the Captain’s Dinner, and endless other Dutch cultural nuggets that I didn’t really care about then.
What else can I do to squander the myriad opportunities in my own city? Sheesh.
