I Like This 8bit-ish Sound

@3:16.

Which reminds me, a bunch of us went to the Blip Festival a few weeks back and I was pleasantly surprised at what I heard. The headliners were Anamanaguchi, who are kind of big because they did the soundtrack for Scott Pilgrim vs The World, which I, uh, haven’t played, so… I’m a bad geek. :( I enjoyed it, anyway.

One of my favorite old school VG tunes is from Zero Wing. Indeed, the one that gets used (remixed, I guess) in that All Your Base meme… But the original is actually a really good song. Good thing it’s the Level 1 song, because I am really bad at that game.

Boat Parties and Amsterdam

I enjoy going on boat parties around Manhattan primarily because it reminds me of my first night ever (New Years) in Amsterdam. Rich and I were at a New Years party at NDSM Werf (Wharf) which is above the IJ, not exactly where you’d normally go as a tourist. It was this industrial boat yard kinda place, and there were different areas for different music. We went to the first building we saw because we didn’t know where else to go and were a little too timid to ask. I mean, we had just landed in the Amsterdam like 3 hours ago and had only been to Dam Square up until then.

Maybe I Should be Deducting Taxes For Donations

But I’m too lazy and I don’t really care that much.

Maybe I’ll care when I start giving over $1000 at a time to charity. But then again, maybe I’ll never get to a point in my life where I can comfortably give $1000 at a time because I’m not the kind of person who takes deductions for all the little things.

Hmm.

Morning Coffee

I was never into coffee enough to drink it daily. Plus the last thing I need to put in my body is a(nother) substance I can actually get addicted to. But Rich has a little 3-cup French press at work (I’ve had one for a few years but it has seen little use at home), and now that I learned you can also use it to froth milk (thanks, Bobby Flay and your Irish breakfast episode), I’m all over that. I’m trying to perfect my technique everyday and I actually enjoy making coffee in a French press. There’s something charming about doing things manually.

On that note, I may be ready for a manual watch, but I already blew a boatload of cash on a few quartz watches, so that’ll have to wait.

Mounting Watch Obsession

For the entire week, I went to bed thinking about watches and woke up thinking about watches. I even had a dream the other night about Rich wearing a Casio G-Shock. Two weeks ago I couldn’t have cared less about movements and crystals; suddenly I’m checking out everyone’s wrist and wondering what’s ticking underneath. I mean, watches are basically jewelry these days—certainly no one is using their watch to navigate or determine flight speed—but the fact that there’s gadgetry behind it makes it interesting to me, as I don’t normally give a rat’s rear end about jewelry.

I am almost glad the styles I like (chronographs, pilots, divers) are largely in the domain of men’s watches and nearly impossible to find for a wrist of my size. It limits the watches I can lust over.

It’s Time

I’ve been half in the market for a halfway decent chronograph watch for a couple years now. I got a bit more serious about my search recently and have been spending way too much time researching this pursuit. The watchuseek forums have been particularly detrimental to my ability to keep this as a less than casual interest.

Anyway, I scratched my chrono itch with a couple pieces (Tissot T-Race and Kienzle Klassik), but just now I stumbled on a beautiful Patek with a moon phase subdial. Hey, pretty rad, I thought. [TMI ahead!] Then it occurred to me that my monthly flow should be synced with the phase of the moon. I say “should be” because I don’t really pay much attention, which puts me in, uh, less than desirable circumstances from time to time. But with a moon phase watch, I ought to be more aware! All my periodic problems will be solved! (Not really.)

Too bad these stupid watches are like $60,000.
