I Hope Nobody in My Tech Dept Follows Tech News

A few weeks ago I saw a drawing of the fancy lulzsec guy with the top hat, monocle, mustache, and wine glass. I like fancy guys! I thought it was cute so I drew my own rendition of it on my whiteboard, which hangs outside my cube for everyone to see. I actually thought he was from the Rage Guy series.

When I realized it was the lulzsec mascot, I shrugged and left it up there, figuring most people would just think it was a whimsical doodle of a fancy fellow. Then I saw it on Colbert Report and decided it was getting too well-known to leave up without raising eyebrows. However, I still wanted to showcase my artistic prowess (HAHA) so instead I just crossed it out.

I drew this for lulz without realizing it was about lulz

Aaand only a couple days after I crossed it out, lulzsec announced they were disbanding. Go figure. I’m sure nobody really paid attention or cared about my silly little drawing, but it doesn’t look too good on my part.

Why I Shouldn’t Have Nice Things

Why is it that when I wear my most expensive watch, which is also the smallest and thinnest, I bang it on everything doing the most basic activities, from holding the elevator door to grabbing a soda can out of the machine. But when I have any of my cheapo watches on, nothing ever happens. On top of that, I managed to nick the crystal on my nice watch within days of owning it.

Sunglasses at Night

I was out with some friends last Friday and we ended up at Cielo. At one point, as I was making my way through the club, I heard a guy go past me and say, “Why is she wearing sunglasses?” I wanted to put my heel through his throat.

So here’s the deal for you folks who don’t do this every week. Two words (or is it one?): strobe lights. Clubs are pretty dim most of the time, and my eyes adjust to that level of light. However, every so (too) often, the whole place gets flooded with what feels like 10,000 flashbulbs going off straight into my face. It’s uncomfortable and it hurts my eyes. After seeing stars several dozen times, I said to hell with it and started bringing sunglasses to clubs.

The laws of coolness have been tightened so much that even I, at 26, am beyond the age where I can legally try. I’m not trying to look badass or mysterious or flashy. I’m just trying to save my goddamn eyes from falling out of my head.

These Boots are Made for Music Festivals

The dust at Electric Zoo has always been pretty wicked, especially last year, and I knew from previous years not to wear open sandals unless I wanted to spend an hour scrubbing dirt from between my toes. This year I got more summer-friendly boots (ankle instead of calf length).

Turns out all the EDM festivals this year will have floors in the tents, and Electric Zoo is taking a ton of other measures to keep the dust factor way down. Go figure.

China: Pissing Me Off Daily

Vietnam in live-fire drill amid South China Sea row

Just scroll down and look at that map. Seriously, China? Seriously!?

If they don’t do something that pisses off the humanitarian in me (where do I start?), nor the American side of me (toys with lead, tainted pet food), it’ll be something that pisses off the Vietnamese side of me. So sick of them. I don’t care if I have to pay $2000 for a toaster anymore.

When Not to Spend a Lot on a Watch

Continuing my recent watch entry trend… I am a member on a lot of those “sample sale” type sites. There’s usually a watch sale on at least one of those sites on any given day. Prices range from sub-$100s to well into the thousands. Is it worth it? Well, that depends.

Drugs and Health Class

Global Commission on Drug Policy reports what we all already know: the war on drugs is a failure and we should decriminalize drugs.

In school we’re taught that all drugs are bad and never do them. A lot of people, at least in some of my circles, think all that stuff was BS. I, however, beg to differ. The drugs portion of health class, while useless for stopping anyone from doing drugs, armed us with the knowledge of how to do drugs safely. By telling us the specific dangers/effects of drugs, it allowed us to be able to take care of other people, and ourselves. Plus knowing that means there’s no surprises your first time, and allows you to make an informed decision on what drugs you’d want to do for different occasions, if at all. They even gave us specific tips for how to help someone who has had too much to drink. Sure, a lot of it is common sense stuff, but it’s good information to have when you’re a dumb little squirt going off to the free-for-all that is college.

I did definitely blindly believe all drugs were bad throughout all my grade school years, thanks to the drugs program, but once I got over that I think the lessons helped more than harmed. I remember one time in high school a classmate matter-of-factly asked the teacher, “What’s so bad about marijuana?” I and half the class laughed because I thought it was a stupid question. To me, pot was the same cocaine was the same as meth was the same as heroin. Different effects, obviously, but all terrible drugs that will cause you to go crazy, get addicted, and die. Now I wish I had known enough then to defend that guy and push the issue.
